Outside reporter script

Here's the script for the outside reporter featured in my news programme for one of the stories:

David Moyes takes blame for Man Utd defeat at Olympiakos

Manchester United manager David Moyes says he is to blame for his side's 2-0 loss to Champions League opponents Olympiakos on Tuesday.

United were favourites to beat the Greek side over two legs but they now face the prospect of missing out on the quarter-finals.

“I didn't see that level of performance coming, I just didn't see it”

"I take responsibility,". "It's my team and I always front up."

United registered their first and only shot on target of the match in the 89th minute as they slumped to a surprise defeat.

Moyes, who left teenager Adnan Januzaj out of the squad, admitted they had not done enough to secure a potentially valuable away goal.

"I am just surprised,". "I didn't see that level of performance coming, I just didn't see it.

"It's the worst we've played in Europe. We didn't offer enough on the night to create a goal.

"There is undoubtedly talent at Manchester United but we didn't show it."

  • Manchester United's defeat, added to Manchester City's loss to Barcelona and Arsenal's reverse against Bayern Munich, means Premier League sides have lost their Champions League last-16 first-leg ties by a combined scoreline of 6-0

My news programme script

As a part of my news programme coursework, I had to produce a script.
The script was mostly followed during recording however at times some parts of the script were changed and also changed during the editing.

Main presenter

Wellcome to the Media Arena only on Hereford Radio.

On the show today:

BBC’s director general wants the licence to include iPlayer.

One of the BBC channels to be taken down in order to save money.

In sport: Our reporter Paul Read:

Outside reporter

, I’m outside Old Trafford as Man United’s most recent defeat in the Champions league once again leaves fans questioning David Moyes’s future at the club, and the clubs chances in the competition.

Also, the progress… Or the lack of it from the premier league sides in the Champions League.

Main news presenter:

More on this story later on in the show. Also coming up, Katy Perry’s video offends some muslims. All this coming up on the Media Arena only on Hereford Radio.

If you’re paying your BBC licence, you might find that soon it could go up. That’s because the BBC director general Tony Hall wants the licence increased to include iPlayer.

He says that according to their research the public is prepared to pay from £15 to £20 a month instead of the £12 a month they are paying at the moment.

However, should the bbc licence be increased?

It’s recently been announced that the BBC is to take down one of their channels in order to continue with their savings plan.

Tony Hall says that he would rather make a single dramatic cut than make small cuts to separate budgets.

A long time BBC presenter Jonathan Dimbleby said that BBC 2 and BBC 4 could murge because they broadcast similar content.

If BBC 3 will be taken down however, it’s content will still be available online.

Lots of muslims have been offended by the Dark Horse video, as it shows an Islamic necklace being burned. The video has sparked a petition for it to be pulled from youtube because of it’s offencive content.

More than 50,000 muslims have shown their support for the video to be taken down because of a scene that shows an Islamic necklace being burned by a lightening short from Perry’s eyes.

Most signatures came from Britain however, Muslim countries like Pakistan Qatar and Saudi Arabia have also entered the debate.

The video had over 30 million views on Youtube and is in the top 10 in the UK charts.

That’s all for the show, join me next week for more media news only on Hereford Radio.

My News Programme Evaluation

After creating my news programme, now I've put together an evaluation of the whole project. Including research, making the final product, and also talk about the audience feedback and my plan and how different or how similar the product is to what it was planned to be.

News Programme Evaluation

When making my news programme, in the planning stage I researched different forms and conventions of a local news radio programme.

When making the final product I aimed to include all of the forms I’ve researched. Including outside news reporters, witnesses or opinions from the members of the public on a story, two different opinions to represent the different views on a news story were also taken into account when recording the news programme. I also made sure that when presenting a news story or when the outside reporter was giving their report, that the story contained evidence to back up certain information. For example, in the story about Manchester United, I made sure that I include the responses from the club’s manager as the evidence to the rest of the story.

I had to do the same to the main news story of the programme as it also included opinions of the Director General of the BBC, so I had to make sure that I included them in my programme as evidence.

Another form of a news programme that I had to make sure I use is of course for the presenter to be impartial in regards to the stories on the show.

Another form of a local news programme that I had to insure I follow, is for the programme to be related to the local area. Therefore, the radio station the programme was made for was named Hereford Radio. Also, since the stories weren’t from a local area, I decided to interview people from the local area on a specific news story and get their opinions.

In my original plan, the main news story was intended to be from the local area. However, in the final product, the stories were not from the local area, however, one of them featured views of the locals.

Originally  I planned to have witnesses for a certain news story, however, for the final product I decided to just include views of local residents for one of the news stories.

However the rest of the plan for my news programme, the radio beds, pop music instrumentals to relevant stories went as planned.

The feedback I got from my audience to the first draft of my news programme was really helpful. The one great advantage of getting feedback from someone who’s a first time listener to your product is that they’ll find things that need to be improved quicker than the creator of the programme. Also I was told about the things I need to change that I didn’t realise when I was making the programme, after making these changes I also realised how effective the feedback was, because the news programme sounded much better and more professional after the suggested changes were implemented.

I’d say the main things I learned from my audience feedback which I could use not only for this piece of coursework but for future projects are:

That someone who is listening to your programme for the first time can spot errors and areas for improvement quicker and easier than the creator of the show.

Also I learned that I need to work on my planning so that the show does not exceed the time limit.

Overall the audience feedback has been very helpful and I made changes to the programme that I didn’t know were needed until they were pointed out by the audience themselves.

Other pieces of feedback included the volume levels of the voice recordings and the radio bed, the volume of certain people recorded was louder than the person who was interviewing them. Also some responses were shortened because of the feedback I got suggested that they were unnecessary. After changing the responses mentioned I found out that some of the responses did in fact need editing. This I believe made my news programme sound more professional and realistic.

In conclusion I learned that audience feedback is always much better and gives you much more to improve than you initially expect.

I used lots of different technology to research and produce my news programme.

I used the internet to research different news stories for my show, using various news websites.

To record the presenter parts of the news programme, I used Soundforge in combination with an audio CONSOL in a recording studio.

To record any outside content, like the recordings of members of the public as a part of one story on the programme, I used the Voice Memos app on my iPhone. The microphone wasn’t always the best when recording outside, however it was good enough with some audio editing applied afterwards.

To edit and put the whole news programme together, I also used Soundforge.

With SoundForge I also created the different materials for my news programme, including the radio beds and other sound effects.

To upload my news programme to my blog I used an Audio Boo account which allows you to upload up to 10 minutes of audio onto the internet. I used this service as Blogger does not allow users to upload audio.

My News Programme Plan

I'm still working on my news programme coursework, now I've also produced a plan for creating my final project.

My News programme Plan

Write any necessary scripts for the news reports or programme links.

Collect stories for the programme, thinking of which people can be interviewed relevant to the story, the local area etc.

Arrange and record interviews with witnesses/contributers for appropriate news stories.

Arrange and record interviews with members of the public for certain news stories, thinking of the best target audience depending on the news story.

Edit the recorded interviews, reports and links.

Produce the news radio bed used at the start, end and the main story of the programme.

Find and edit music instrumentals to be used in certain news stories.

Mix the news stories together with the song instrumentals and produced radio beds as appropriate.

Listen through the programme and make any necessary corrections needed.

Things needed

Recording studio to record the links

Portable recorder for recording outside broadcasts and interviews.

Computer and audio editing to put the news programme together and make corrections.

Computer with Garageband or with sampled loops to produce the news programme radio bed.

My News Programme Format

After doing my research into different news radio programmes, looking into different target audiences, and compairing different news programme, I started working on my own news radio programme format.

My News Programme Format

The programme starting with a generic news programme radio bed. With the summary of the news stories featured on the show.

The programme will have it’s “Main news story” from the local area, with the produced generic radio bed over it.

Featuring on the programme, will be a sports story and a music/entertainment story beside the main news story of the programme.

Near the end of the story and throughout the programme, the main news story will be repeated.

Also, some news stories will feature recorded interviews, to represent a view of a professional relevant to the news story, or the view of members of the public affected by a specific news story.

For some news stories, there will be a instrumental of a pop song in the background, so that it will fit the target audience of my news programme, which is young people.

The next step is to think of the stories for my news programme, then recording, radio bed production and much, much more

AS Media Coursework Task Research

After doing the previous media practise task which was to make a short interview with a guest of my choice, I was given the official task. I have to create a 5 minute local news programme.
The programme has to include outside broadcasts and interview as only some it it's features.
The first task is of course the research, I have to look at some news programmes to find out how they are done, and if I would like to do something similar.
I decided to look at 3 radio news programmes, look at the typical features, and then how different are they from one another.
This is what I managed to find.

Radio News Programmes Research

Newsbeat

News programme on Radio 1, targeting young audience.

It’s typical features are:

1.   Upbeat music throughout the programme

2.   Pop music used as a background sound in the different reports

3.   The programme features entertainment and music news

4.   The main story is repeated many times throughout the 15 minute show

5.   There’s a slot within the show for news presenter to read comments on a specific news report

6.   Lots of the interviews with the public are young people aged 15 to 29. Radio 1’s target audience age range to which it was changed in 2012 after a BBC trust review into radio 1.

Taken from the BBC Publications website.

The World Tonight

A BBC Radio 4 news programme

Typical features:

1.   The news reports featured in the programme are summarised at the beginning, featuring some clips of the reports.

2.   Then the BBC News are read out before the rest of the programme, featuring correspondent material for each news story.

3.   The stories are covered in extreme detail.

4.   The news stories are from the international spectrum.

5.   The main story on the programme is covered for a longer amount of time than the other stories.

6.   The language used is much more extensive and for a young person may sound complicated.

Differences between NewsBeat and The World Tonight

1.   The World Tonight does not use upbeat or pop music in the background of the programme or the news reports.

2.   The World Tonight is 45 minutes long unlike Newsbeat which is 15 minutes.

3.   The stories on The World Tonight are covered in much more detail than on Newsbeat.

4.   The World Tonight does not feature sport or entertainment news.

5.   The World Tonight doesn’t feature any comments from the public on the featured news stories.

6.   Both Newsbeat and The World Tonight use different language suited to their target audience.

BBC 3 Counties Radio Local News

Typical features:

1.   Main 3 minute news programme every hour.

2.   Short news update 30 minutes past the hour

3.   Main news story across the UK followed by local news and national sport.

4.   The news start with a radio news music bed which fades out at the start of the main news story of the programme.

5.   The news include local travel news every 30 minutes, every 15 minutes on the Drive Time show.
